Urban Renewal: “A Growing Wilderness Block”

Background and concept of transformation

The Senno Corridor is located in Zone C of the Nojima Cultural and Living Community. The community was formerly known as the Dongjiang Grain Distillery, which was built in 1951. On the basis of preserving the original 18 buildings and landscape texture, it has gradually become the most vibrant cultural community in the area since 2019.

Corridor: Building a smooth flow of traffic

More than 70 years ago, the old factory building was rough and heavy, and the remaining buildings were independent of each other and lacked systematicity. To combine the building with commercial space and create a sense of roaming, it is necessary to stitch together the sense of fragmentation of the existing site, considering both the original building conditions and bridging the gap between the old building and the new application scenarios.

Preservation is the best design expression for the renovation of historical buildings. In order to avoid unnecessary demolition and renovation, Designers has reorganized the flow line, connecting the space with lightweight aerial corridors and stairs, bringing an overall smooth experience. It expands the single walking function on the flow line, optimizes the accessibility of the second floor space, and combines the protection and innovation of old buildings.

Steps: delicate reshaping at a small scale

The side of Zone C near the park exit lacked attractiveness before the renovation, and visitors rarely entered the entire park through it. Designers hopes to integrate the building and pedestrian walkway through the renovation of the exit, connecting several buildings at the exit to enrich the park experience and attract visitors to come and check in. The open function serves as both a passage and a step plaza, meeting the needs of celebrations during holidays. Stepping up the steps, the open road between the buildings connects to the iconic old chimney along the axis.

Wildness: the ruggedness of nature

Designers hope to present the charm of nature invisibly. Retain the original tall plants and create a wilderness garden where plants can grow freely. The collision of natural disorder and artificial intricate geometry enhances the atmosphere of the old building. The time when industrial winds solidify is intertwined with the natural seasons of prosperity and decline, gradually merging with the present and the future.
