A case study of a private courtyard – entrance vestibule and outdoor dining space

The client of this project is a childless couple who are about to retire and are full-time residents of a resort residential area on the beach. The courtyard is located in the front courtyard of the villa, and the designer has designed a new entrance vestibule and a small rest area for them.

From an architectural perspective, the design of this garden was considered – striving to create space rather than just decorating existing areas, considering space first, and then materials and plants. Based on the client’s desire to build a garden with a modern and minimalist appearance, the designer only used steel, wood, and concrete, as well as simple and clear design lines, to create this restrained and elegant garden space. The designer approached the design of Bainbridge Garden in an architectural way – hoping to create space rather than decorating existing areas, thinking from a spatial perspective, and then considering materials and planting. The client requested a simple modern appearance, so the designer implemented a restrained color palette of steel, wood, and concrete, while always maintaining simple lines.

At the request of the client, the designer planted shrimp film flowers and used Acorus tatarinowii for salt tolerance. The fence reduces the breeze in the garden, allowing only a limited amount of breeze to pass through without causing any obstruction or turbulence on the other side. Feather grass and Calvert grass create a gentle layering in the sequence and a softness that matches the transparency of the cedar fence. At the request of the customer, Robinia pseudoacacia was also used, and the salt resistance of Acorus calamus was utilized. The fence allows a limited amount of wind to pass through, reducing the breeze in the garden without causing turbulence on the other side. Feather grass and Carl Foster grass create a gentle layered entrance sequence and softness to match the transparency of the cedar fence.
